Valley of the Sun Stage Race – Tavian Bryant

Valley of the Sun Stage Race – Tavian Bryant

First race of the year was the Valley of the Sun Stage Race. This was the second year in a row that I’ve competed in this event. I was really looking forward to the event this year because I knew it would give me the opportunity to gauge my progress. I was also looking forward to the event this year because it was my first race as a member of TeamPossabilities. It was great to have teammates around and I was proud to have the opportunity to represent the organization.

The Valley of the Sun is a three stage race that features a time trial, road race, and criterium. I wasn’t happy with my road race time from last year, so my main focus was to improve my time in that event. In addition to that, I was also determined to drop a significant amount of time for each event. I went into the weekend chasing a variety of personal goals, that were based on the last years results.

I spent many hours and rode thousands of miles on my handcycle over the last year, and my Valley of the Sun results definitely demonstrated that. My cumulative time for the three day event was 2:41:19, which resulted in a fifth place finish in my category. I ended up exceeded the goals I set for each individual event which led to an overall time that was 36 minutes faster than last year.

Valley of the Sun was a great way to start the season. I definitely feel like I’m headed in the right direction, but I have more work to do. I’m already thinking about my next race which will be the Redlands Classic in May. I look forward to working with my coach over the next few months, and setting new goals as I gear up for my second Redlands Classic.
