Alfonso’s 2018 First Nationals

Alfonso’s 2018 First Nationals

Thanks to Team PossAbilities I was able to go to my very first USA National Road Race and Time Trial Championships. Here is a little recap of how my race went. Despite the humidity it was an experience of a lifetime that I will forever cherish.

First stage of Nationals, the Road Race, I earned 4th place in an intense and challenging race with many hills and chances to catch some really high speeds. The start of the race was fast and crowded as we maneuvered for positions in the draft the hills quickly decided positions for us.  It was very exciting to race with so many awesome athletes and Paralympians. I managed to create and stay in the second group to my class. Ending the race in a comfortable 4th.  I am very happy with my progression in the sport as this is only my second year of racing. It is nice to see all the hard work and sacrifices pay off.  Second stage was a team relay. I did not do the relay race but was there to watch and support all fellow athletes. It was a fun race to watch and I will definitely join in next time. The third stage a Time Trial was also fun and challenging a good amount of climbing and descents some guys held off on the road race and came in fresh to crush the TT I earned 9th place in this race. Overall for my first National Championship I am happy with my results and will continue to work hard to get better at the sport.

Many thanks to my handler Maria Garcia who helped me every day out there in Augusta, Georgia she volunteered to help Team PossAbilities for this event and I was blessed to have her assigned to me. Thanks to Team PossAbilities I am here at Nationals
