2018 National Championships – Augusta, GAChris Sproule
This year, the Paracycling Time Trial, Road Race, and Team Relay National Championships were held in Augusta, GA. There was an excellent turnout with all of the top athletes in attendance. We faced hot and humid weather in our quest to top the podium and the quality of the athletes and the racing was excellent. One of the most exciting things to happen at the event was the official introduction of the team relay to the United States. Team relays are common in Europe and are part of Paracycling World Cup events. Each team consists of three people. Each person does a total of three laps and team member’s alternate turns and do one lap at a time. With each lap taking about 2 minutes to complete, the pace is all out. The intensity of the effort off the charts and it was definitely a learning experience. I hope that we will have a chance to hone our team relay skills at more events in the United States. Maybe at my favorite race…the Redlands Bicycle Classic.
