September means school is back in session…but not before one last beautiful San Simeon cycling vacation is in the books! By Jenna RollmanJenna Rollman
September has been a great month with lots of adventures, fun, and a new beginning for me as a college student!
The summer is over but I went on one last camping trip at San Simeon State Park, cycling up and down California’s stunning central coast exploring new roads and revisiting favorite routes to take in the ocean’s incredible beauty while riding my handcycle! Ragged Point, the small coastal town of Cayucos, Morro Bay, and Montana de Oro State Park did not disappoint and each place had breathtaking views to enjoy, leaving lasting memories to close out the summer season with. What a great trip it was and I returned home ready to start school!
I am proud to share that on September 20th I officially started the journey towards my bachelor’s degree in Nutrition and Food Science at Cal State University San Bernardino, and as my t-shirt says, “I’m in thePack”!!🐺🐺
My school spirit is already abundant and I plan to immerse myself in the CSUSB experience by taking advantage of everything the beautiful campus has to offer and I can’t wait to buy some clothes that sport my Coyote pride! GO YOTES!!
It feels absolutely AMAZING to begin the next chapter of my college education after traversing a long and bumpy road at Chaffey College. Getting to a University has taken me much longer than usual because figuring out what I wanted to do with my life didn’t come easy and I wandered around aimlessly for a few years after high school until I found cycling when I was 21.
Wanting to transition from a recreational cyclist into a competitive athlete I started reading books on how to train properly and discovered the science of nutrition, becoming instantly intrigued and eventually leading me to come upon the career of Registered Dietitian. I made the decision to go back to school part time at 22 years old to pursue my associate’s degree finally with a major in mind, but sadly not far into my education I had my cycling accident that paralyzed me and brought my schooling to an abrupt halt.
Not wanting to give up on my educational and career goals I returned to Chaffey after taking time off to recover and learn how to navigate life in a wheelchair. Coming back to college as a person with a disability was a social, emotional, physical and mental challenge to say the least but as most of you know “giving up” and “quitting” are words that simply don’t exist in my vocabulary or my mind, so I pushed on despite the difficulty and graduated from Chaffey College in 2017 with my associate’s degree and general education requirements!!
Attending CSUSB was my first choice as to where I wanted to compete my bachelor’s degree program and now I am there, checking off yet another item on my Life Goal List!
I have LOTS of hard work ahead of me at CSUSB but I am READY to get it done and enjoy every moment along the way!
CHEERS to achieving your goals and making your dreams come true no matter WHAT obstacles may arise, if you BELIEVE in yourself you CAN DO ANYTHING!!!
