The Guy You Didn’t See ComingChris Sproule
The 2019 St. George Marathon started how most other St. George Marathons do…Pitch black, freezing, and windy. The excitement of the start with the music, athletes, lights, and helicopters circling above with the wind, freezing temperatures, and darkness create this weird but amazing dichotomy. I had made some calls a week before the race to the fast guys who usually race it and, to my surprise, they weren’t coming. Having won it the last 4 times, I thought this would be my victory tour where I could just enjoy an easy win…until a guy rolled up next to me on the starting line. I didn’t know him. I had never seen him before. He looked the part with the right equipment and right racing attire. He had the same handcycle as I did….a fast one. Darn! This may not be as easy as I thought. You think you know all the competitors and have a pretty good idea where you rank as a racer in your division but you can never account for the guy you didn’t know about. I thought he looked fast sitting at the start but, hopefully, he just looked fast. Wrong! He was fast! It was a great race and he managed to take quite a lead for a while. I fought back and was able to take the win for the fifth straight year. The lesson learned…don’t ever get overconfident because you will never know who will show up. There is always someone faster than you…maybe you just haven’t met them yet.
