Tips for Creating a Racing ScheduleChris Sproule
Every year, athletes have to come up with a racing schedule. Which races do you want to compete in this year? Here are some tips for how to decide what races should be on your schedule: 1) It has to work with “life”. If it cannot work with your other commitments, like your job or your kids, it probably is not going to be on your racing schedule. These are typically the non-negotiables. 2) What is best to achieve your goals? Hopefully, you have discussed your goals with your coach and have identified what races will be most beneficial in setting yourself up for success and achieving your goals. 3) Do I have the money to do it? Whether it is personal funds, sponsor money, or contributions from friends and family, if you can’t afford it, then it is not likely to happen. 4) What kind of racing do you want to do? Marathons, road races, time trials, criteriums? Do you enjoy one type more than another? Does your training plan with your coach help you decide what you need to do? 5) When possible, race in places that you would actually enjoy visiting. We don’t have a lot of say in where the races are but we can race in places we would want to go. It just makes the race a lot more enjoyable when you have a great view in an amazing city.
