2021 Road Nationals – CriteriumChris Sproule
The criterium was held in downtown Boise on a great, rectangle shaped, course. Road conditions were perfect and the weather was hot and slightly humid. The race time was pushed back a bit which made everyone try and find a shaded place to stay cool before the event. My plan was to go out hard and paceline with the lead or second group. The plan worked well for a few laps then I fell off the back. I ended up alone, working twice as hard, and not going as fast as the lead group. I was working harder, not smarter. I wish I could have held the wheel of the group in front of me but this is where I saw the effects of a year and a half of no racing. Some of it was fitness but here is where I really saw the mental effects of the layoff. I think I likely placed 8th or 9th but the scoring was incorrect and I was unable to protest because I had already left the race location when I saw the results. I’ll get ‘em next time!
