Port Angeles High School Athletic Hall of Fame
Hello, it’s the end of August and the heat is brutal still in Arizona…. Just over a month to go! I was able to travel to my hometown in northwest Washington and visit for a couple days. It was very refreshing being next to the ocean and seeing some long-time friends. My high school started a hall of fame award for previous graduates that have accomplished much athletically regardless of sport. I was honored to be recognized for my pre spinal cord injury cycling and my post spinal cord injury cycling events. It was a big event with over 500 people in attendance. I have great memories from back home and painful memories. I think the Olympic Peninsula is probable the most fun location where I have ridden a bike during summer. Sealevel to 5500ft in 20 miles, flatlands, rolling hills, so much nature and more.
I have been strength training and been busy with teaching. I took more time away from cycling as It has been harder than I thought it would not making the Paralympics with my accomplishments. I have just been training a bit differently and the break has been good. It’s good to be reenergized and crave the time spent on the bike again. I typically take a month off of cycling annually anyways. I think we all need to reassess our lifestyle/behaviors on a fairly regular basis to be aware from stressors.
The semester started 3 weeks ago and all students have been consistent and engaged in the materials. I’m teaching two intro to sport science classes currently and a nutrition class is starting quickly. Other than that, I’m happy to be feeling stronger, getting good rest, eating a well-balanced diet to meet my health and performance needs, and trying to be more social. Being social is one of the most overlooked/disregarded parts of wellness. Health is wealth.
