This post may feel out of place for many of you and I did just post my blog yesterday for the month of August but I wanted to follow up with this. My lecture today, first of the fall semester 2026, is going to incorporate endorphins versus dopamine and how each play an integral role in this thing called life. Because my students are mostly pursuing Health Professions I want them to understand how these healthy habits contribute to Wellness. The below is something I will be sharing with my class. It means a lot to me as over the past 30 years we’ve really brought a lot on to us with the adoption of so much technology that it’s hurting us. But, also a way to use healthy habits when times get hard. I believe this is applicable to the importance of the PossAbilities program here at Loma Linda University as well. This program truly encourages health promotion for those who face difficulty, physical or mental, and maybe seeking an opportunity or struggling to move forward.

“Life has a way of throwing us off course, but our daily habits are the ultimate tool to protect our perspective and keep us moving forward. This is where the chemistry of endorphins and dopamine becomes so powerful. When unexpected challenges hit, they cause stress and friction. By intentionally leaning into healthy habits—like exercise, routine, or creative outlets—we trigger endorphins. These act as our internal shock absorbers, easing the immediate emotional and physical strain so we can clear our heads and regain our footing. That resilience sets the stage for dopamine. Every time we choose to take even one small step forward despite a setback, our brain releases dopamine. This creates a sense of progress, fuels our motivation, and reminds us that we are still in control of our journey.Ultimately, building consistent, healthy habits isn’t just about reaching a final goal. It is about creating a reliable framework that balances our mind, insulates us against chaos, and gives us the momentum to keep advancing, no matter what tries to derail us.”
