Fiesta Island Time Trial

The Fiesta Island Time Trial in San Diego, CA, is one of my favorite races. Doing laps around an island with the ocean view is a great way to spend a morning. Fiesta Island TT is unique. There are no divisions between handcyclists and you never know who will show up. This past weekend there was a US Paracycling National Team Camp at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista and all the athletes there were in attendance. It [...]

Los Angeles Marathon

After a solid start to the season at the Valley of the Sun Stage Race in Phoenix, AZ, it was off to Los Angeles for the LA Marathon.  It was a fast field this year and we took off quickly from the start.  I had a solid performance but made a few technical errors that kept me off the podium this time.  It’s amazing how much I continue to learn about cycling strategy 4 years into this sport.  You [...]

2018 Valley of the Sun Stage Race

The first official race on my racing schedule this year was the Valley of the Sun Stage Race in Phoenix, Arizona. With the arrival of my new Carbonbike four days before the first race, I wasn’t able to get much time getting the bike fit quite right and race ready. With my last race being in November, it felt like it had been a while since my last race and it was. I had a solid weekend and continued [...]

A Great Way to Start the Season!

To compete and win at the highest levels requires the optimal combination of training, coaching, nutrition, experience, support, and equipment. Remove any one of those components and you can find yourself off the podium wondering what exactly went wrong. Handcycle technology is changing so quickly that what was a competitive bike three years ago has become obsolete. I have often heard, from national team coaches and athletes, that, with inferior equipment, “You’ve already lost the race before it even [...]

Team PossAbilities: St. George Marathon and JetBlue Long Beach Marathon

It was a great weekend for Team PossAbilities at the St. George (UT) Marathon and Long Beach Marathon (CA).  St. George was beautiful and the community turned out in droves to support the racers.  It’s no wonder this race is ranked one of the most scenic and most well organized marathons by Runners World Magazine.  We took off fast and were quickly separated with good drafting techniques by the lead racers.  I was running second for the first 7 [...]

2017 Season Update

As we close the 2017 cycling season and start 2017-2018 training season racing, I look back at the opportunities Team PossAbilities has given me and can’t help be feel humbled. The results I had this season were solid and I continue to improve each year. The opportunity to travel to Arizona, Colorado, California, Nevada, and Florida to race has given me more experience racing against some of the best in the county. This year some things started finally clicking. [...]

My Journey to Team PossAbilities

In 2003, I was a Firefighter working for Las Vegas Fire & Rescue at one of the busiest fire stations in the country. On May 23, 2003, I was paralyzed in an accident. Not long after my accident an organization that helps address mobility issues for those with physical challenges provided me with a handcycle. That handcycle sat staring at me for years, only brought out for the occasional recreational ride, until I decided that both the handcycle and [...]

Team PossAbilities Represented in Project Hero California Challenge

As a proud Team PossAbilities member, I was excited to learn that I was selected to participate in the Project Hero California Challenge from October 14-21, a 450 mile ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles.  It will be some of the most challenging riding I’ve ever done as we go 450 miles over 7 days.  I can’t wait to sport the Team PossAbilities kit on our sponsor day!!!  Thank you Team PossAbilities for opening doors!!!

Let’s Go Racing

I’m looking forward to more training-season racing next week and being able to represent Team PossAbilities at the St. George Marathon in Utah and at the Long Beach Marathon in California.  It’s always a good turnout and they’re some of the most picturesque marathons I’ve had the opportunity to race in.  The St. George Marathon is October 8, is fast, and almost all downhill.  The Long Beach Marathon is October 9, is relatively flat, and fast as marathons go.   I [...]

Pensacola Cycling Classic

It was a great week in Pensacola, Florida, racing at the Pensacola Cycling Classic. The weather was amazing and the racing was outstanding. The Time Trial course was along the beach, the Road Race course through the western Florida forest, and the Crit in beautiful downtown Pensacola. I had a solid showing but was plagued with mechanical problems because of my handcycle that was damaged in transit. I’m looking forward to the St. George Marathon and Long Beach Marathon [...]
